International Women in Engineering Day
Celebrating International Women in Engineering Day at Welland Medical
Today, at Welland Medical, we join the global community in celebrating International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) brought to you by the Women’s Engineering Society (WES). This year marks the 11th anniversary of this important event, dedicated to honouring the remarkable contributions and achievements of women in the engineering field. This year’s theme, #EnhancedbyEngineering, highlights the incredible work women engineers are doing globally.
Engineering has traditionally been male-dominated, but over the years, women have made significant strides, breaking barriers and paving the way for others. However, women remain underrepresented, with 2023 figures indicating that in the UK, only 15.7% of engineers are women. INWED gives women engineers worldwide a profile when they are still hugely under-represented. At Welland Medical, we are proud to be part of this progressive movement, fostering an inclusive environment where talent and innovation know no gender boundaries.
Honouring Our Female Engineers
Our team at Welland Medical comprises brilliant female engineers whose expertise and dedication drive our mission to improve patient care through innovative medical devices. These women bring diverse perspectives and unique problem-solving skills, contributing to research, development, and manufacturing advancements.
One of our esteemed leaders, Sarah Duckworth, our Engineering Director, shared her thoughts on her role and impact at Welland Medical:
“I joined Welland Medical in 2020 as Head of Engineering and have been focused on developing and implementing a technology strategy aimed at improving the efficiency and capability of our production equipment… I’m passionate about driving performance to deliver excellent quality and innovation to our customers. I feel very privileged to use my skills and knowledge to support the development and delivery of stoma care products and the opportunity to positively impact the lives of so many customers.”
Breaking Barriers and Inspiring Change
Women in Engineering Day also serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges female engineers face, including gender bias and underrepresentation. At Welland Medical, we are committed to addressing these issues by promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within our workplace. We believe that a diverse team fosters innovation and creativity, essential components for success in the medical device industry.
Looking to the Future
As we celebrate Women in Engineering Day, we look forward to a future where gender diversity in engineering is the norm rather than the exception. We envision a world where women engineers are not only welcomed but are also integral to shaping the future of technology and innovation.
At Welland Medical, we remain dedicated to this vision, continually striving to create an environment where every engineer, regardless of gender, can thrive and make meaningful contributions. Today, we celebrate the incredible women engineers who have brought us this far and those who will lead us into the future.
Happy Women in Engineering Day from all of us at Welland Medical!
